A BALANCE BETWEEN ALPINE SCENERY AND MEDITERRANEAN ATMOSPHERE
Lake Garda, formerly known as Benaco, is the largest lake in Italy and covers an area of approximately 370 km², spanning the regions of Veneto, Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige. The northern part, which is narrower and nestled between high mountains, has a profile reminiscent of a fjord, whilst the southern basin opens out into a vast flat area with a particularly mild climate. This combination creates a unique ecosystem, characterised by regular winds, crystal-clear waters and typically Mediterranean vegetation.
Over the centuries, the geographical and climatic characteristics of Lake Garda have favoured the development of fishing and the spread of certain crops typical of the area, such as olive trees and vineyards, which yield highly prized local products such as Bardolino DOC wine and Garda DOP extra virgin olive oil. The shores are dotted with small villages and scenic routes that allow visitors to admire the diversity of the landscape from ever-changing perspectives. The water quality, biodiversity and the presence of protected areas all contribute to making Lake Garda a natural environment that is unique in the world.
Lake Garda is one of the most visited destinations in Europe thanks to its ability to combine entertainment, sport, culture and fine dining. The towns on the eastern shore, such as Bardolino, Garda and Torri del Benaco, offer a natural balance for those seeking long walks, food and wine experiences, and routes winding through green hills and lush vineyards. The western shore, renowned for towns such as Gardone Riviera and Limone sul Garda, offers a timeless atmosphere, set amongst ancient lemon groves and historic villas.
Among the areas most popular among tourists are Malcesine, dominated by its Scaligero Castle and linked to Monte Baldo by a scenic cable car, and Sirmione, famous for the Grotte di Catullo and its thermal waters. Every corner of Lake Garda has its own distinct character, easily recognisable and offering different experiences in every season.
Lake Garda is served by an extensive public transport network that makes it easy to get around between the various towns and scenic spots. One of the routes most popular among tourists is the Torri del Benaco–Maderno ferry service, which allows you to cross the lake in just a few minutes. A more eco-friendly way to travel that reduces journey times and offers a practical solution for those wishing to explore the shores of the lake without long car travels.
All the towns are well connected to the main theme parks in the area. In no time at all, you can reach some of the most famous Italian theme parks, such as Gardaland, Movieland, Parco Natura Viva or Parco Giardino Sigurtà. For tourists, and particularly for families with children, Lake Garda is undoubtedly a place where it is impossible to get bored, because every day can turn into an opportunity to discover something new and unforgettable.
